Challenges

Saint Joseph’s Fund

The Saint Joseph’s Fund is a vital source of funding for financial aid and merit scholarships, enabling the university to support students and reduce debt upon graduation. Chair of the Board of Trustees, Jim Norris ’85 and his wife Dinae ’87 will match every gift made to the Saint Joseph’s Fund for scholarship and financial aid up to $30,000!

Bonus Challenge: For every 50 seniors from the Class of 2021 who make a gift, Jim and Dinae will provide an additional $10,000 to the Saint Joseph’s Fund!

Student in Need Fund

The Student in Need Fund provides assistance to students who are struggling with financial shortfalls while on their path to attaining an SJU degree.

Hawk Athletics

Thanks to the generosity of Rick DeRose ‘87, SJU's varsity teams will be competing against one another in two challenges designed to build excitement, raise support and increase donor participation for each program. All donations made on this day will directly support the varsity team or teams of your choice. Challenge prizes will be spent at the discretion of the head coach to immediately impact the student-athlete experience. Only gifts designated to one of SJU's varsity programs will count toward the challenge goals. The minimum gift amount is $10. One unique gift per person, per team will be counted as participation.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Our diversity, equity and inclusion work is comprehensive and integrated with academic and co-curricular aspects. The academic experience is framed as opportunities for skill development in cultural competence. Saint Joseph’s students are encouraged and trained to cultivate a growth mindset and to think about diversity issues beyond the usual aspects of race, ethnicity, social class, gender and sexuality. We want our students to have an enhanced appreciation of why intercultural competence matters and how to apply learned skills to everyday interactions while on campus and beyond into their chosen professions. Reese Blair ’98 will match all gifts 1:1 up to $5,000 to ensure we hit our goal for DEI Strategic Innovation Fund!

Kinney Center for Autism Support and Education

After holding a virtual camp in 2020 to safely support clients through the pandemic, the Kinney Center is excited to return to on-ground programming in the Summer of 2021. The devastation resulting from COVID-19 has made availability of financial assistance more imperative than ever before. Your gift to the Kinney Center will facilitate a return to normalcy and access to a summer of fun and growth for campers with financial need.

DC vs NYC Scholarship

SJU’s two most active regional alumni groups – DC and NYC – are going heart-to-heart in this inspired challenge to raise funds for scholarships. The regional alumni chapter that brings in the highest alumni donor participation percentage wins bragging rights for this year's challenge!

We CARE

Making an impact on addiction and recovery takes a healthy dose of people who CARE. Saint Joseph's newly-formed Center for Addiction and Recovery Education (CARE@SJU) is charting a new way forward and the challenge now is to grow our base of donor support. Amplify your impact — show that you CARE — rise to the challenge today!

The Burton Fund

In this history-making challenge, Randall Miller, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history, will match dollar-for-dollar (up to $50,000) every gift made to the David H. Burton History Fund. For those who love to take those specialty courses in History, this is the fellowship that brings the scholars to campus. Dr. Julia Mansfield is this year’s Burton Fellow and is currently teaching “History of Infectious Disease". In addition to teaching and research, the Burton Fellow enlivens the campus community through public lectures and faculty workshops.
